10 & 11 May 2023 GLOBAL MOBILITY SUMMIT 2023

S h o r t N e w s M a r c h 2 3 , 2 0 2 3 Worldwide Visas and work permits during Ramadan: processing delays expected Foreign nationals and their employers can expect delays in processing immigration applications from mid-March to mid- April in the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey, and parts of Asia as Ramadan and Eid-al-Fitr (breaking of the fast) are celebrated. During Ramadan and Eid-al-Fitr, many government offices around the world reduce their hours and/or close altogether. Delays in processing applications must also be expected in the weeks after Ramadan, as experience shows that a backlog of applications still to be processed builds up during the closures. Brazil Reintroduction of a visa requirement for nationals of Australia, Canada, Japan, and the U.S. Brazil reintroduces visa requirements for nationals of Australia, Canada, Japan, and the United States. As of October 1, 2023, nationals of Australia, Canada, Japan, and the United States will no longer be exempt from visa requirements when entering Brazil for tourism, business, sports, or artistic purposes, or when transiting through Brazilian airports. Instead, they must apply for an e-visa to enter the country. The new visa requirement leads for these nationals, additional administrative hurdles, costs, and possible delays in entering Brazil for the above purposes. Japan Digital Certificates of Eligibility Now Available The Japanese government now allows many foreign nationals to obtain a digital copy of the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) for applying for certain long-term visas. This eliminates the additional step of mailing the COE copy to the applicant overseas, streamlining the immigration process and reducing costs. 3
