S h o r t N e w s J a n u a r y 1 8 , 2 0 2 4 EU: Bulgaria and Romania to partially join Schengen area in March 2024 With effect from March 31, 2024, Bulgaria and Romania will partially join the European Schengen area. At the same time, border controls on air and sea traffic between Bulgaria, Romania and other countries in the Schengen area will be abolished, making air and sea traffic easier and faster, as the travelers concerned will no longer have to be checked at the borders. For the time being, however, border controls on land travel between Bulgaria or Romania and other countries in the Schengen area will remain in place. OUTLOOK: In the current year 2024, the European Council will continue talks on lifting land border controls with Bulgaria and Romania. However, no date has yet been set for a further vote on this issue. OVERVIEW: The Schengen area is intended to ensure the unrestricted movement of people in Europe. To date, 23 of the 27 EU member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland have belonged to it. Türkiye: Visa-free travel to Türkiye has been extended to citizens of numerous countries Since December 23, 2023, foreign nationals from Bahrain, Canada, Oman, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the United States can travel to Türkiye visa-free for 90 days within any 180-day period for tourist or business purposes. Singapore: Recent changes: Company turnover data must be updated before submitting new work permit applications / An online form must now be completed to report certain changes regarding the employment of foreign nationals Employers in Singapore must update their company’s last three years of financial turnover data in the Employment Pass Online system before they can submit a work pass application. If the turnover value for any particular year is not available, such as if the employer is a newly-opened business or the business was not in operation during that year, the company will have to indicate this by entering a 0 in the system until such data is available. Foreign nationals holding Personalised Employment Passes and their employers in Singapore, who must report certain changes regarding the foreign national’s employment (such as change in salary, termination of employment, or change of employment, among other changes) to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), must now complete an online form instead of submitting the change to the MOM by email. 3 convinus.com
