CH-EU-Ukraine / March 3, 2022 Border Opening for Ukraine and Sanctions against Russia In light of the latest developments in Ukraine regarding the Russian invasion, currently Poland (Schengen & EU member state), Hungary (Schengen & EU member state), Moldova (neither Schengen nor EU member state) and Romania (non-Schengen, but EU member state) have opened their borders to Ukrainian citizens. As of March 1, 2022, Ukraine has opened its borders to anyone who wants to fight against Russia. On February 25, 2022, Ireland's Justice Minister announced the lifting of all visa requirements for Ukrainian citizens in Ireland (non-Schengen, but EU member state). Refugees can enter visa-free, but they would have 90 days after arrival in Ireland to sort out their residency status. Otherwise, Ukrainian citizens may enter a Schengen member state visa-free for up to 90 days. However, according to the statements of the British Home Secretary on February 28, 2022, the United Kingdom (neither Schengen nor EU member state) is not sure about the visa exemption for Ukrainian citizens, as the risk of "unsafe" travelers (e.g. Russian agents) to the United Kingdom is too high. Currently, the Swiss embassy in Ukraine is closed. Swiss citizens are advised to contact the DFA helpline either by e-mail or telephone. As a Schengen, but non-EU member state, Switzerland has adopted EU sanctions against Russia. These are primarily goods and financial sanctions - i.e. blocking of accounts and economic resources. Air traffic for flights from Russia is blocked since March 1, 2022 at 3:00 pm. Flights for humanitarian, medical or diplomatic purposes are exempt. Visa facilitation for Russian citizens to Switzerland is also suspended with immediate effect. Entry bans have also been issued against several individuals with close ties to Switzerland and the Russian president. 3 convinus.com
