WORLDWIDE WHAT?

WORLDWIDE WHAT?

WORLDWIDE WHAT? INTERCULTURAL INTELLIGENCE IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CORE COMPETENCIES! Author: Markus Eidam Mr. Eidam, many people have certainly heard of the trendy topic of "intercultural competence. Why is this topic so important to you? Since the beginning of the new millennium, the international business relationships of many European companies have grown rapidly. Not only are a large number of products sold abroad, but the workforces of many companies are also becoming increasingly international as a result of acquisitions from foreign companies and the growing immigration of foreign specialists. So far so good. If it weren't for the great challenge of cultural differences. Due to their upbringing and religious differences, people from other countries sometimes behave completely contrary to what we consider "normal". This means, for example, that negotiations are conducted differently, that foreign employees want to be managed in a different way, or that international customers have unusual expectations of good service or a perfect product. I know colleagues who don't conduct negotiations or design products. What about them? There are also numerous differences on the micro level that should be considered. In China, for example, you have to communicate criticism in a completely different way than you are used to in your home market. Or e-mails and telephone calls have to be conducted differently in order to convince French business partners, for example. Not to mention the many religious blunders that foreigners are only too happy to put their foot in. The calculation is quite simple: If you keep a few important things in mind when working with international colleagues, customers, and business partners, you can really save time [because your counterpart will then work with you more easily/faster/efficiently]. And, the work will also be more fun; for both sides. So, what is intercultural competence? Do you have a concrete example for us? Only one? :-) A big cultural issue is how to deal with hierarchy. For example, you should be much more authoritarian with hierarchy-oriented employees in order to achieve your goals! This is often the case in Japan, France, Poland, or China: The behaviour of managers towards subordinate employees is rather authoritarian, in some cases even derogatory. However, since many Central Europeans are used to this in a different way, they may [automatically] behave too collegially and are therefore not respected as a manager in the event of a situation. Are there any other tips you can share with our readers? Pay attention to political issues! In some countries, people react very sensitively to certain political topics. My tip: Always leave politics out of conversations if you are not sure how your counterpart will react. 9 convinus.com
